August 2023 Update:  Harley has purchase a beautiful Grey Brahman heifer to raise over the next year.  Over the month of May she learned what to look for in a calf and shifted from looking at steers to heifers.  Harley is excited about her purchase and her adventures ahead.  She has two shows in August to gain experience in showing her heifer and also to use as progress check-ins.  Harley is using this opportunity to not only gain experience in raising a calf, but also a better understanding of the financial aspect of taking on a project of this size.

Good luck Harley!  We are excited to see what is next for you and your heifer!

Thank you to all of our donors for supporting Top Hand Scramble Foundation.  If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do and support the students as they raise a calf and learn important life lessons.  We continue to look for ways to grow the Foundation and it starts with you.

We would like to thank our newest corporate donor, Cameron LNG, and their employee giving fund.  We appreciate your support and generous donation to our Foundation.

Thank you Cameron LNG for your support!

Join us on Nov 6, 2022 at the Calf Scramble Progress Show.  It is in Brenham, TX at the Washington County Expo.  This Progress show allows Calf Scramble participants to practice in the show ring and participate in different seminars.  Please join us on Nov 6th in supporting the rodeo and the Scramble recipients.

Top Hand Scramble loves hearing from their previous scramble participants and we have an update from Travis, scramble recipient 2021-2022.

Travis has shared with us that he has continued to show animals and selected Red Cross steer to show next March at the Rodeo again.  He received the Lone Star Award this summer at the State FFA convention (the highest award at the state level) for this .  Travis also showed his pig at the PLSR last month.  Not only has Travis excelled in the show ring, he also lead an 80+ mile trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch.  Keep up the great work Travis! We look forward to hearing about your future successes!

JW is growing and and enjoying her new home.  Check out those long eyelashes!  She seems to be adapting well and thriving in her new environment.

Milo has named his heifer!  This beautiful Beefmaster heifer has been named JW.  We looking forward to what the year bring for both Milo and JW.  Keep following along for more updates from Milo!

Milo has selected his calf.  He has selected a beautiful Beefmaster heifer. She hasn’t arrived home to her new barn yet, but Milo is busy getting her new home ready for when it is time to bring her home.  Her name hasn’t been decided yet, but we can’t wait to find out the name Milo chooses.  We wish you the best in raising this beauty.

Welcome Milo to the Top Hand Scramble Foundation family!  Milo, Dayton FFA, caught the calf that was sponsored by Top Hand Scramble Foundation at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  We will be following his journey throughout the year from catching the calf to selecting the one he is going to raise to showing it next March at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  We look forward to your journey and meeting your calf.

Travis and Whiskey competed in two shows during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2022 season.  The first was the Jr. Market All Continental Breeds Scramble Steer Show, Class 4 – Middle Heavy Weight Scramble Steers (1260 to 1350).  Whiskey weighed in at 1275 lbs and he placed 5th.  The second was the Jr. Market Limousin Steer Show.  We are extremely proud of what Travis and Whiskey accomplished this year.  Congratulations!

Travis and Whiskey are ready to compete!  Come cheer Travis and Whiskey on at 5pm on March 15, 2022 in the Main Cattle Arena of NRG Center.  We are very proud of the work Travis put in this year to raise Whiskey and are hoping for great things for both of them! We will then celebrate Travis on March 16, 2022 with the awards ceremony and breakfast.

GOOD LUCK TRAVIS AND WHISKEY!  See you on the 15th!

Travis, our 2021 calf scramble winner from Dobbie HS FFA, selected Whiskey, part Charlotte and part Limousine, raise this year.

July Update: “the responsibility grew greater as Whiskey got bigger. He broke 900 lbs. this month and is continuing to grow
physically and emotionally every day. I was faced with a heavy batch of ring worm but was able to cure it after 2
weeks. He is starting to listen to my commands better every day and is getting plenty of exercise. I have run into the
problem of him peeing so much that his pin become muddy. I’m working thru the issues as we speak but it’s been a
constant, tedious battle. His behavior has changed into an aggressive play and he likes to roll around in the dirt. He
really loves his pin though because he doesn’t to want to come out and walk when I want him to but once he has
cleared the pin, he’s not too bad. He’s getting better every day. It’s pushing me mentally and physically.

Congratulations to Travis, Dobie HS FFA! He caught the calf that Top Hand Scramble Foundation sponsored in the 2021 Houston Rodeo Calf Scramble. We look forward to following your progress as the year progresses. Good Luck!
